Newcastle United transfer news: Eddie Howe talks about ‘tough’ transfer market after Darren Eales addition

Darren Eales’ Gareth Bale comparison offers clue to Miguel Almiron’s future at Newcastle United

Miguel Almiron knows he is ready for a defining season in his Newcastle United career. The Paraguay international has been on the fringes of the first team since the arrival of Eddie Howe and knows he must somehow work his way into the starting XI if he is to have a future at St. James’ Park.

The 28-year-old finished the season strong but with Newcastle’s newfound wealth and ambition in the transfer market it raises questions over his future with the club. Almiron has struggled in terms of goal contributions since signing for the club, but you can’t fault his work ethic.

Speaking at the 2019 Leaders in Sport Summit, Atlanta United chairman Darren Eales compared Almiron’s slow start at Newcastle to Gareth Bale’s emergence at Tottenham Hotspur. Now taking on the CEO role at St. James’ Park, Eales’ arrival could give the winger more time to impress, given their success together during Almiron’s time in MLS.

Eales said: “It took a little while for Miggy to find his feet when he moved from Paraguay to the Argentine league and the same with us in our first MLS season. He was amazing but he missed a few chances.

“I’ve always compared him to Gareth Bale from my time at Spurs. He always seems quicker when he has the ball than without the ball. It’s all about confidence and I just hope he can score that first goal and then they will come in waves.
