From the frozen peaks of the Giants to the fetid fields of Caelid and the graceful plains of Limgrave, Ring of Elden features a collection of truly beautiful environments. While previous entries in FromSoftware’s free collection of Soulsborne titles have included more than just a few gorgeous vistas and atmospheric ruins, 2022 Ring of Elden took things to a new level.
Yet, while players are free to do whatever they want in the game’s open world, Ring of Eldenit’s dark souls DNA is most prominently featured in its vast, maze-like Legacy Dungeons. Probably the areas where players struggle the most, Ring of EldenLegacy dungeons can vary widely in difficulty, but few would consider any of them easy. Whether it’s a first game or a seventh new game plus a round, some of these slots simply never give players a break.
6 Raya Lucaria Academy
Although players intend to clear Stormveil Castle and claim the Great Rune of Godrick before exploring Liurnia of the Lakes, a hidden path along the eastern wall of Stormveil will allow players to bypass the blockade and travel further away in The Lands Between. In the middle of the next area, players can find Raya Lucaria Academy, home of Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon.
Although access to the dungeon is not as easy as it looks, once inside the area proves to be relatively accessible for lower level players. While by no means easy, Raya Lucaria Academy doesn’t house many massive enemies, an inordinate amount of minibosses, or hosts of enemies that absolutely need to be dealt with. Skilled players could probably sprint through much of the dungeon without encountering much trouble, and the two bosses, while undeniably tough, pale in comparison to some of the late-game baddies.
5 Stormsail Castle
Stormveil Castle is most likely to be the first Legacy Dungeon Ring of Elden newcomers will grapple, but this represents a noticeable spike in difficulty compared to surrounding areas like Limgrave and the Weeping Peninsula. Guarded by Margit, the Fell Omen, getting to the castle can be a struggle of legendary proportions, with many unprepared players likely sacrificing dozens of lives to the grafted guardian.
While Stormveil Castle isn’t as difficult as some of Ring of EldenIn late game dungeons, it houses downright annoying enemies and sometimes sees players taking on five or six opponents at once. Additionally, from troll-like Omen to the gruesome Grafted Scion, the minibosses found in Stormveil are not to be taken lightly. That’s all to say nothing of Godrick the Transplant, a huge, monstrous being with a suite of close and long-range attacks that can be hard to dodge as well as a truly intimidating second phase.
4 Lyndell, Royal Capital
Situated at the foot of legendary Erdtree, Lyndell, Royal Capital is a magnificent, almost borderless legacy dungeon that is perhaps even larger than comparable Soulsborne towns such as Anor Londo or Irithyll of the Boreal Valley. From its soaring bell tower and golden roofs to its unfathomable subterranean dungeons, the seat of power in The Lands Between lives up to its lofty reputation.
Although quite grueling, especially for those daring enough to descend into the depths to be marked by the Three Fingers, Leyndell, the royal capital is relatively sparsely populated and many of the region’s toughest enemies can be avoided without too much trouble. Although it’s so massive that it’s difficult to navigate, the path to Erdtree’s entrance is fairly clear and the dungeon boss, Margott, will be more or less a breeze, as players will already be aware of most of his movements.
3 Volcano Mansion
Although many inhabitants of The Lands Between adhered to the Golden Order, Praetor Rykard rejected the harmony of the Erdtree Age and sought unfathomable power so he could challenge it. After finding such power in the form of a great serpent living beneath Mount Gelmir, he fed upon it and began a campaign to battle the forces of Leyndell and lead astray any tarnish that might one day stand against him by as Elden Lord.
Only accessible after completing a series of quests or discovering a very well-hidden Illusionary Wall, Volcano Manor is full of difficult enemies. From poison-spitting lizard soldiers to gruesome iron maidens, players will constantly be kept on their heels. It all culminates in a boss encounter against Rykard, Lords of Blasphemy, a two-stage fight that uses FromSoftware’s classic Storm Ruler sword, although it was renamed in this case.
2 Ruined Farum Azula
A seemingly ancient city suspended in the air amidst a massive whirlwind, Crumbling Farum Azula is arguably the most unique legacy dungeon in Ring of Elden. Although brimming with undeniable originality, some souls veterans can draw comparisons between it and Archdragon Peak, an endgame location of dark souls 3.
Encountered near the climax of the game, Crumbling Farum Azula is undeniably difficult. Patrolled by beastmen, tree sentries, and knife-wielding eagle-like creatures, it’s hard to get through no matter what level or build. That’s, of course, not to mention the area’s notorious bosses and mini-bosses, which are some of the toughest in the entire game. The Godskin Duo alone can hold off some players for a while, while baddies even bigger ones like Dragonlord Placidusax and Maliketh, the Black Blade can come across as a crushing crush on the controller.
1 Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree
the dark souls The series was innovative in that it wasn’t afraid to hide huge sections of content behind very hard-to-find illusory walls or otherwise off-the-beaten-track areas. Ring of Elden takes this to a new extreme with Haligtree and Elphael de Miquella; Hidden behind a secret quest that requires players to find very well obscured medallions in Lirunia and the top of the Giant Mountains, just getting to this legacy dungeon is a difficult task. Venturing there, of course, is quite another matter.
Beginning in the precarious, infested branches of Haligtree, players who haven’t given up after falling one too many times must face off against Loretta, Knight of the Haligtree, who grants access to Elphael. From there things gradually increase in difficulty until players eventually find Malenia, Blade of Miquella, which is easily the toughest boss in the game. Ring of Elden and which probably ranks among the most difficult of the entire Souslborne series.
